Sizing & Costume care
Here information about sizing of my children's costumes and some hints and tricks on how best to take care of an Atelier Spatz children costume.
Children’s standard measurements
Sizing options within each product listing refer to standard measures within each age group and have been tried and tested on actual children. For example if a costume is labelled “3-4y” it generally fits kids up to 4 years of age and the corresponding body measurements listed below.

All costumes can be made to measure. Please get in touch if you are unsure about your kids measurements or our costumes fitting. A measurement guide is available upon request.
Generally, I recommend costumes to be loosely stored in a dress up box or hung in a closet. Keep them away from direct sunlight or extreme temperature changes as well as damp.
Ready made costumes
Most of my ready to ship costumes are designed and made to be enjoyed by children and maintained by us parents with practicality and durability in mind.
Here are a few useful hints regarding the cleaning and maintenance of some of my ready to ship costumes:
Superheroes
The superhero sets can be machine washed with similar colours and air dried. Please use low temperatures and a slow spinning cycle. When ironing, don’t touch the logos and applications directly with a hot iron. Iron from the other side or put a tea towel or cloth over it.
Pirates
Shirts and shorts can be washed and ironed in your regular wash with similar colours. Vests can be washed as delicates with similar colours. Turning the vest inside out helps protect the metal buttons. Pirate coats are made from cotton velvet and should be dry cleaned. You can spot clean the velvet and let the velvet air dry. Please only iron from the left at low temperatures.
Clowns and harlequins
Two piece clown and harlequin suits as well as baby romper suits can be washed with your regular wash and ironed as regular clothing. Please remove the pompoms before washing.
Satin and cotton clown collars can be washed with your regular wash and ironed as regular clothing. I recommend to tie the satin ribbon together before the wash since it might slip out of the collar during the wash.
Tulle collars
Tulle is NOT suitable for machine washing. Please wash at low temperatures by hand. Tulle can be ironed at low temperatures with a cloth between iron and tulle.
Hats
Hat should be stored in a box or cupboard. You can dust them off with a dry brush. If a pirate or musketeer hat comes out of form, just bend it back with your hands and let it rest. Sometimes leaving them in a steamy bathroom helps settle the fibres again.

Bespoke costumes
Taking care of bespoke costumes, especially those made from various materials, requires special attention to maintain their quality and longevity.
Bespoke costumes often use a mix of fabrics and materials, such as silk, velvet, leather, sequins, lace, or synthetic fibers. Understanding each material's care requirements is crucial.
General Care Guidelines
- Storage: Store costumes in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and humidity. Use garment bags made of breathable fabric to protect them from dust and damage.
- Hanging: For delicate fabrics like silk or chiffon, hang the costume on a padded hanger to avoid stretching or misshaping. Avoid metal hangers, as they can cause rust stains.
- Fold or Roll: For costumes with heavier elements or intricate designs, rolling the garment gently can prevent creases and maintain its shape.
Cleaning
- Dry Cleaning: Many bespoke costumes are best dry-cleaned, especially those with delicate or intricate detailing (e.g., embroidery or sequins).
- Handwashing: For costumes made from washable materials (like cotton), handwashing in cold water with a mild detergent is safest. Never wring or twist.
- Spot Cleaning: For specific stains or dirt, use a gentle stain remover and a soft cloth or sponge to avoid damaging the fabric.
- Vodka: Yes, you can use vodka (diluted with water or straight up) to clean any delicate fabrics or costumes with trims and applique. Have a look here for a guide how to use vodka to clean your costumes.
Handling Specific Materials
- Leather: Condition leather periodically with a leather cream or balm to maintain suppleness. Avoid getting it wet and let it dry naturally if it does.
- Sequins/Beads: Gently brush off dust using a soft, dry brush. Avoid washing these elements as they can become damaged or detached.
- Velvet: Avoid hanging velvet garments, as the fabric can stretch. Store them flat and clean them with a soft vacuum or gentle brush to remove dust.
- Silk: Handle silk with care to prevent snags. Dry clean only, or if washing by hand, use cool water and a mild detergent, never wringing it out.
Avoiding Common Issues
- Moth Damage: Use natural moth repellents like lavender sachets or cedar blocks when storing your costume.
- Color Fading: Protect the costume from prolonged sun exposure and use proper storage techniques to prevent fading.
By following these steps and understanding the care requirements for each material, you can ensure your bespoke costume remains in excellent condition for years to come.
